How to choose the RIGHT photographer
First things first, you’ve gotta know your budget.
In Southern Utah, a family photographer will typically cost about $350. Wedding Photographers in Southern Utah will typically cost $2-3,000. If you’re not finding a photographer in the budget you had in mind, see what the average session is in your area and plan for that. Maybe you need a little more time to save up. Inquire anyways because chances are your photographer won’t be available this weekend. Plan on booking at least a couple months out.
Next, know what style you’re looking for.
Do you like bright and airy photos or dark and moody? Do you like bold colors or soft tones? If you’re not sure, picture the photos on their website hung up in your home. Do you like them? Do you want to show them off? If not, its best to keep looking.
It’s important to try not to get overwhelmed.
I know that there is a sea of photographers out there especially here in our lovely Utah. When you type in that google search, “Utah photographer” or “Southern Utah photographer”, you’re going to get overwhelmed! If this is the way you’re searching, keep an eye on their google photos and remember the tips above – look for the style you like and then click that website link.
Navigating the search on Instagram and Facebook.
If you’re searching on Instagram, you’re also going to be overwhelmed but those highlight bubbles should be your best friend. Typically, they have all the information you need like investment, locations, etc. For example: https://www.instagram.com/rochellesladephotography/
Facebook will pretty much have the same amount of information as instagram with the exceptions of services listed which will be really handy. For example: Rochelle Slade Photography
Social Media is NOT the best way to inquire with a photographer.
Now, I know that this isn’t common knowledge so don’t worry if you’ve already done this. The best way to contact your photographer is NOT through DM’s, Instagram messages, or Facebook messenger. It’s most likely going to be a FORM or EMAIL from their website. Now, if it’s not blatantly obvious to you how to contact your photographer, a social media message will do just fine.
Social media messaging is convenient but there are lots of hiccups. Some photographers get tons of messages and therefore your inquiry gets lost in the static. We also have a million ways of communication so if you message us on Facebook or Instagram, it’s just not going to be as easy to access as our email is. Email is always better so make sure to find their email and try that first.
Last but not least is to make sure you feel comfortable with them and confident in their abilities.
Connection is really important because chances are you don’t have tons of modeling experience so you’ll need to feel confident that your photographer can direct you. You’ll get a feel for this as you go through their booking process. Ask yourself questions like,
- Did they respond quickly to my inquiry?
- Did their website/guide look and feel professional?
- Did my interaction with them feel professional?
- Was it easy to send a deposit, sign a contract, and deal with the legal things?
- Do I feel like they know what they’re doing?
